Skiing the Planet

"Mongolia is kind of close, right?" Story about an attempt to ski everywhere in the world where there's snow. And in some places where there isn't. On and off-piste skiing on all continents, skiing into craters of live volcanoes, climbing, photography, and travel.

The blog about skiing around the world. The most recent blog articles can be found in Blogspot. This page lists all the skiing-related articles from this blog series.
Serena at the quiet hour
Today's outing was in Serena, a small commercial ski hill in northern Espoo. Serena combines skiing with summer activities from downhill cars to tree climbing routes, and one of the largest spas in Finland. It has been very popular... the Corona times have hit it as well, however. Nevertheless, skiing was great.

Be the ski lift
Today’s exercise was to be the ski lift for sister’s twins as they tried out skiing for the first time on a small hill (not visiting a ski resort yet, this was a more relaxed setting). They made lot of progress, snowplough, turns, how to fall, etc. Fun day!

Espoonkartano tree skiing
Covid. Lines everywhere. Commercial skiing... maybe not for us this year. Fortunately, Jarmo knew a place where we could get some forest skiing in. And even the sun was shining!

Colors of Switzer...Hyvinkää
These are some of the first official runs of the season, in Hyvinkää's Sveitsin Hiihtokeskus. Very nice, I loved the evening colors in snow-falling weather. Well done!

Maintenance!
I've been putting this moment off for some reason. But now they are there: both of my main skis are in maintenance and repair holiday at the Ski Service. Lets see how shiny they come out!

Birthday skitrip
This month's skiing was a bit of a challenge. Travel is difficult, unlike in August. Many of things that one could do were already done.

First trip to the alps after the pandemic - summer skiing in Hintertux
Summer 2020. This was the first flight after the pandemic. Even to the birthplace of the initial spreading of the disease: the Austrian alps. But no crowded after-ski this time... just masks, solitary skiing ... but how wonderful was that skiing! Hintertux is a long-time favorite and the skiing is just superb. Also pretty much the only place to ski in the summer in Europe, either here or in Zermatt.

A different Ylläs 24
I decided to do my own Ylläs 24 event, to replace the one cancelled in April. It is already June, not a lot of snow remains. But some, and what a wonderful sunshine for the entire 24 hours - midnight sun was shining, as Ylläs is far above the arctic circle.

Skiing Tahko on May 30th
What a wonderful experience, hiking up the 200 meters high ski hill in deserted Tahko, in sunshine. And taking a sunset ski run back to the lake, almost all of it on still preserved snow.

Patchy skiing in Vihti
Tero and I went to Vihti to see if we could still ski it. Vihti is the best, much snow left! A few parts not covered in snow, but one can ski through them!
